The glamorous lifestyle of the communist elite is highlighted in contrast with the struggle for survival of ordinary people as a charismatic officer of Securitate (Romania’s feared secret police) falls in love with a celebrated actress whose past hides a terrible secret. She is married to a dissenter who believes his fight against the communist machine can make a difference in a hopeless world. Their daughters life is turned upside down when the destinies of her parents and the secret police officer collide. A cunning minister who is the right hand of president Ceausescu, a corrupt high-ranking communist official seeking revenge, a couple of kind communists who adopt a half-mad child from an orphanage, a compassionate and idealistic doctor - they all become entangled in a labyrinth of lies and intrigue at the core of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. As betrayal and violence spread dark wings over their lives, the wounded survivors undergo an agonizing but inevitable transformation. Some of them perish in the process but some find the light at the end of the tunnel.
